Lucho's First Halter

The goal of a young foal's first halter day here at 4C is to imprint trust and calm handling.

This is Lucho at about two months old, wearing a halter for the first time.

He did really well. Calm, sweet and very well behaved, which is what you hope for with a young foal on a day like this. The nice part was not just that he accepted the halter, it was seeing how relaxed he already was with Khaler. You could tell there was trust.

These early moments matter and the first halter is not about forcing anything. It is just the beginning of teaching them that being handled by people can be calm and normal. Later on that will help with leading, grooming, hoof care and loading up when you need to go somewhere.

This is a big part of how we try to handle horses here on the Caballos side of 4C, slow, low stress and paying attention to the individual animal in front of us.

Lucho gave us a good start and now we will just keep building on it, one easy step at a time.
