Truchero Santa Lucia: On the Road to Los Gigantes
On the horse ride toward Los Gigantes, Truchero Santa Lucia gives us a good place to rest, eat, and enjoy a simple piece of local mountain life.
On the longer horse ride toward Los Gigantes, one stop I am always glad to make is Truchero Santa Lucia in San Jose de Rivas, Perez Zeledon. It sits just off the road on the way up, and for riders spending a full day in the mountain, it makes for a welcome pause.
What I like about Santa Lucia is that it still feels connected to the place around it. The trout ponds, the running water, and the simple open-air meal all feel of this valley rather than staged for visitors. If you want to, you can cast a line into the pond and catch the trout that will become your lunch. It comes to the table fresh, grilled or fried, with plantain, salad, and a cold agua fresca that tastes especially good after hours in the saddle.
Stops like this matter to a ride. A long day in the mountain is not just about reaching one destination. It is also about the places along the way that let people rest, eat well, and experience more of the local life that makes this valley what it is. Santa Lucia helps break up the route and reminds me that some of the best days on horseback are shaped by the people and places around the trail as much as the trail itself.
For riders heading toward Los Gigantes, it is a practical stop and a memorable one. Good food, cold water, and a chance to stretch your legs all go a long way before getting back in the saddle.
